Sonoma’s Origins and the Story of the Bear
Many native Americans living in what is now Sonoma—the Coast Miwok, Wappo and Southern Pomo tribes—died of smallpox following the arrival of Spanish settlers in the early 19th century. However, many of the descendants of these tribes are still resident in Sonoma, according to city historian Robert Demler.
In 1823, Father Jose Altimira built the Mission San Francisco de Sonoma, which was under Mexican military control until June 1846, when a group of Americans led a successful rebellion and established the Republic of California. The Republic didn’t last very long and became a U.S. Territory; however, the flag of the rebels and the Republic of California, which portrays a bear, eventually became the state symbol of California. Interestingly, the symbol of the bear derives from an unflattering description of the rebels’ ragged appearance hurled at them by the Mexican defenders— that they looked like “los osos,” or a bunch of bears.
