Picturesque Petaluma

The name comes from the Miwok tribes who once lived throughout the region; the Miwok phrase “péta lúuma” means “hill backside,” most likely referring to the Sonoma Mountain which Petaluma abuts.
Egg Basket of the World
Settlers moved to the area after James Marshall found gold in 1848 and turned to farming when they didn’t strike it rich. Consequently Petaluma became known for its grain and chicken production, which earned it the title of “Egg Basket of the World.” The town continues to honor its heritage with the annual Butter and Egg Days Parade and Festival, originally created in the 1900s to promote the town as part of National Egg Day, which features a “Cutest Little Chick Contest” as well as more than 130 parade units attracting crowds numbering up to 25,000. Today, not surprisingly but not quite “eggs-actly,” Petaluma is known as a “foodie haven of Northern California.”
Built on Bedrock
Because it exists on stable bedrock, Petaluma was one of the few San Francisco Bay area communities that wasn’t devastated by the 1906 Earthquake. Which is why its historic chicken processing plants and well-preserved pre-1900 buildings still stand.
Getting Around
Petaluma covers a wild area of rolling hills and sprawling vineyards. The Petaluma River flows through downtown and creates a serene waterfront where it empties into San Pablo Bay. Drive through downtown to see Victorian-era homes, boutiques and specialty shops, and then enjoy the farmlands along Valley Ford Road.
Several local companies offer tours to see the redwoods or visit local wineries in everything from an open-air jeep to a limousine. Petaluma Transit also has six bus routes around Petaluma.
Historic Downtown
Beer lovers find world-class brews and delicious pub food on the banks of the Petaluma River. Wine lovers enjoy Theatre Square for its small dining establishments, many of which have earned highly coveted Michelin Star ratings, that serve wine by the glass, carafe or bottle. The Big Easy is a restaurant and jazz club and Jamison’s Roaring Donkey has trivia nights, painting and other community activities.
The historic downtown buildings have served as a backdrop for major films and TV series. American Graffiti was filmed at Petaluma High School and near several downtown businesses. Filmmakers also shot Cujo, Howard the Duck, Flubber and Pleasantville throughout the town.
Ugliest Dog Contest
